Quick Look

The heart of community life at Pomfret since 1910. This is where generations of students have shared their stories through the chapel talk tradition.

Deep Dive

Clark Memorial Chapel has stood at the center of Pomfret School since 1910, when it was built as a gift from the Clark family. More than a place of worship, it has always been a place of gathering, reflection, and courage. The chapel talk tradition, where students stand before the entire school community to share their personal stories, began here in the 1930s. Over the decades, these talks have become some of the most powerful moments in students' Pomfret experience — moments where vulnerability becomes strength and individual stories become shared understanding.

The record

At the chapel doors.

The survey sees the chapel's roof. Its doors are in the archive: a page of the 1930 class book, shown whole and unaltered.

Eleven boys in 1930s suits stand in two rows on stone steps before the ivy-framed Romanesque arch of Clark Memorial Chapel's wooden doors; the printed caption below names them as The Pontefract board.
